Last summer I tried to grow tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and all kinds of herbs – everything but the herbs failed. It’s difficult to grow vegetables in pots in a garden that is just a patio so I think this year I’ll try the tomatoes-in-a-bag and use all the pots to grow herbs and salads instead as they won’t let me down!
I don’t have the indoor cupboard space to sow seeds and keep them in the dark and warm until they’re ready to go out so basically I need hardy things that will do fine from start to finish in the little pop up greenhouse in the yard.
Herbs and salads I’ll be sowing in April
- Coriander
- Dill
- Parsley
- Chives
- Spinach
- Watercress
- Basil
- Oregano
- Sage
- Thyme
- Mint
- Rocket
Wish me luck!
Mint from seed can be very variable…good taste, no taste. I always prefer to purchase a mint plant so I can taste a leaf and be sure it has great flavor. Or, you can grow several seedlings and pick the one that tastes best. Always nice to have options. Happy growing.
Yes that’s a good plan. I had a plant mint from cuttings last year and it was very tasty and prolific so I’ll see how much of a difference the shop bought seeds will be.
Good luck with your selection.
Very nice!
Which thyme are you growing? The broadleaf one is pretty hard. It can get huge if you give it the chance and grows from cuttings as well.
You can also try chive. And the good thing is you can cut the tops to use and leave it to regrow.
Thanks for your advice! I think I will try chives as well.
Good luck. I have had some success with pick and come again lettuce in containers.
I want to start a veg patch this year, but am so not green fingered so am already waiting for it to fail and I’ve not even begun yet haha! Good luck with your growing :) xo
